New Zones, Rules, and Safety Tips for Mackay’s Thriving E-Scooter Scene

The urban landscape of Mackay is abuzz with the latest expansion in e-scooter zones, connecting the CBD to North Mackay due to soaring demand.

While the purple e-scooters were initially confined to Andergrove and Beaconsfield, their popularity has surged, prompting a connection to Mackay’s bustling city centre.

A Safe Ride, an Informed Journey

Senior Sergeant Shane Edwards sheds light on the dos and don’ts of riding Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs).

Riders, aged 16 and above (or 12–15 with supervision), can hit speeds of up to 25km/hr outside footpaths.

However, safety is paramount—a helmet is a must, mobile phones are a no-go, and riding under the influence is treated just like cycling under the influence.

Beam’s Ride, Mackay’s Gain

Beam’s Mackay Operations Manager, Cameron Milicevic, champions a Summer Smart campaign, emphasising safety during the holiday surge.

With riders clocking over 500,000 kilometres citywide, the statistics speak volumes. Popular e-scooter spots like Bluewater Quay and Mackay Harbour are topping charts, attracting riders for roughly 11-minute jaunts.

Navigating the E-Scooter Terrain

Mayor Greg Williamson hails the expansion, with over 5000 kilometres ridden since the purple e-scooters arrived in August.

The rider trends show a spike in usage between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 5 p.m. onwards on weekends, highlighting the scooters’ integration into daily life.

Safety as Priority

Beam’s safety initiatives stress responsible riding and parking, ensuring compliance with rules through a three-strikes policy.

The campaign reinforces key rules: no drinking while riding, helmet mandate, phone tucked away, solo riding, and thoughtful parking kerbside.

A Smart Ride Ahead

As Mackay’s e-scooter usage skyrockets, the scene is evolving.

With expanded zones and safety consciousness, riders can navigate Mackay’s urban sprawl, embracing a new mode of swift, eco-friendly travel.

So, grab your helmet, leave the phone behind, and hop on for a smart, swift ride across this vibrant cityscape!
