Senior Sergeant Mitch Benson received the Queensland Police Valour Medal for exceptional bravery in hazardous circumstances during the 2019 fires.
On 6 September 2019, he was a Senior Constable and volunteered with other officers to evacuate Scenic Rim residents. Raging fires were spreading rapidly, while thick smoke and falling embers created life-threatening conditions throughout the streets.
Officers struggled to breathe and communicate, while severely reduced visibility made the evacuation more difficult. At the rear of properties, flames intensified with every gust of wind.
In the early hours of 7 September, police were again tasked with driving through the estates. They used vehicle public address systems to warn residents about the rapidly approaching fire and predicted winds.
When houses began to ignite, officers continued clearing the estates by running from door to door. Their actions ensured every resident was safely accounted for despite the dangerous conditions.

Other honours included the National Police Service Medal, National Medal and Clasps, and National Emergency Medal. The Queensland Police Exemplary Conduct Medal and Queensland Police Emergency Response Medal were also presented.
Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner Certificates, along with a District Officer Certificate, completed the awards presented in Mackay.
Mackay Whitsunday District Officer Superintendent Dean Cavanagh commended everyone recognised during the ceremony.
