What’s Happening?
Hungry Jack’s Mackay City has officially reopened its Peel Street restaurant following months of refurbishment.
The restaurant celebrated its grand reopening last weekend, 24 October 2026, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and special burger promotions. The refurbishment has brought the long-standing restaurant up to the brand’s modern standards. It was among the last Hungry Jack’s locations still operating with its original fit-out.
The reopening marks a fresh chapter for the restaurant, which has served the Mackay community for decades.
Why It Matters
The refurbishment reflects Hungry Jack’s continued investment in Mackay and its commitment to improving the customer experience. The changes aim to provide a more comfortable dining environment while maintaining the familiar restaurant locals have visited for years.
Chris Smith Churchmichael, Hungry Jack’s Queensland General Manager, welcomed the improvements.
“Hungry Jack’s has been part of the Mackay community for decades, so it’s fantastic to give one of our longest-standing restaurants a well-deserved refresh.”
The improvements also consider the needs of restaurant employees, with the updated layout designed for customers and crew members.
Local Impact
Mackay customers can now enjoy a redesigned restaurant with updated decor, improved indoor dining and additional parking spaces.
The refurbishment also provides more convenient ordering options and improved drive-through access for customers visiting the Peel Street location. Churchmichael explained how the changes aim to improve the restaurant experience.
“The refurbishment includes a completely new decor package, a redesigned car park with extra spaces, and the relocation of all 50 seats to the restaurant’s interior. These changes are about making the restaurant more welcoming and convenient for our customers, whether they’re stopping by for a quick meal or sitting down to enjoy our better burgers with family and friends.”
The changes provide returning customers with a refreshed dining space while preserving the restaurant’s established presence in Mackay.
By The Numbers
The refurbishment introduces several changes to the restaurant’s facilities and customer experience.
– 50 indoor seats: All restaurant seating has been moved indoors, providing customers with an updated dining environment.
– 3 ordering kiosks and 2 drive-through lanes: The redesigned restaurant offers additional ordering options and a dual-lane drive-through.
– $5 burger specials: Customers were offered Whoppers and Jack’s Fried Chicken burgers for $5 throughout the grand reopening on 24 October.
Zoom In
Hungry Jack’s Mackay City was one of the chain’s remaining restaurants operating with its original design.
After decades of serving local customers, the restaurant underwent months of remodelling to bring its facilities up to current brand standards.
Churchmichael said the refurbishment recognised the restaurant’s long history with the local community.
“As one of the last restaurants with our original fit-out, Mackay City was ready for an update. We know locals have been visiting this restaurant for many years, and we wanted to give them a more modern, comfortable space while keeping the Hungry Jack’s they know and love. We’re excited to welcome the local community back into Hungry Jack’s Mackay City with a refreshed restaurant that has both our customers and crew members in mind,” Churchmichael said.
Zoom Out
Hungry Jack’s began in Perth, Western Australia, in 1971 and has since grown into a national burger chain.
The company is known for its flame-grilled Whopper, recognised for its smoky barbecue flavour and the slogan ‘The burgers are better at Hungry Jack’s’.
Today, the chain operates more than 480 restaurants across Australia.
Its menu has expanded to include plant-based burgers, chicken products, breakfast wraps and barista-made coffee. Beyond its menu, Hungry Jack’s has introduced delivery services and digital ordering while working to reduce single-use plastic packaging.
The company also supports staff scholarship programmes and charity partners, including Make-A-Wish Australia and Taronga Zoo.
The Mackay City refurbishment forms part of the company’s broader efforts to update its restaurants and respond to changing customer needs.
What To Look For Next?
With the refurbishment complete, the Peel Street restaurant enters a new chapter after decades of serving Mackay customers. Hungry Jack’s hopes the improved facilities will continue supporting local customers and families for years to come.
Churchmichael reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to its restaurant communities.
“We’re committed to ensuring that our restaurants remain places the local community can enjoy for years to come.”
