What’s Happening?

East Mackay golfer Bronson Matchett will return to Blackwater Golf Club on Monday 9 November for The Longest Day charity challenge.

He will join friends from the mining industry for another endurance golf marathon, raising money for Cancer Council Queensland. The group includes players of varying abilities who share an interest in golf and supporting a worthwhile cause.

Why It Matters

The Longest Day raises funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services, helping people affected by cancer. Although Matchett has no direct personal connection to cancer, he believes everyone has a reason to support the cause.

“Even if you haven’t been directly impacted by cancer we all know someone who has. Without events like these we will never solve the problem.”

His involvement began after he took up social golf and saw the event as an opportunity to combine recreation with fundraising.

“I started playing golf a few years ago socially and it seemed like a great way to spend a day on the course while raising money and awareness for a great cause.”

Local Impact

While the challenge takes place in Blackwater, Mackay residents can support Matchett’s fundraising efforts through online donations. His participation also highlights how local sporting interests and friendships can contribute to Cancer Council Queensland’s work.

Matchett encouraged community members to learn more about the event or contribute directly through his fundraising page.

“For more information on The Longest Day or to donate, visit longestday.org.au. For my personal fundraising page, visit longestday.org.au/fundraisers/bronsonmatchett33048.”

By the Numbers

  • 72 holes across four rounds of golf make up Matchett’s chosen challenge, which participants aim to complete between dawn and dusk.

  • $4,430.18 has already been raised by Matchett, exceeding his original $2,000 fundraising goal ahead of the challenge.

  • 36 or 54 holes are alternative challenges for golfers, allowing participants to complete two or three rounds instead.

Zoom In

This will be Matchett’s third year participating alongside his mining industry mates, despite their different levels of golfing experience. Rather than following a strict training schedule, the group approaches the challenge with determination and relies on each other’s encouragement.

“Honestly, we just go for it on the day. We’re all very supportive of each other on the day to keep pushing.”

For Matchett, that team spirit is part of the appeal, making the demanding event an opportunity to spend time outdoors with friends.

Zoom Out

The Longest Day is an endurance golf marathon that tests participants’ skill, strength and stamina while supporting Cancer Council.

Although 9 November is the official event day, participants can complete their chosen challenge anytime throughout November and December. This flexibility allows golfers to select a suitable date and take part in fundraising regardless of their experience.

What To Look For Next?

Matchett and his teammates will aim to complete another successful marathon when they return to Blackwater Golf Club on Monday 9 November. Having already surpassed his fundraising goal, Matchett could raise even more for Cancer Council Queensland with continued community support.

Residents can learn more about The Longest Day or contribute through Matchett’s personal fundraising page.
