What’s Happening?
Dementia Australia is offering a series of free educational sessions across the Mackay, Isaac, and Whitsunday regions from 18 to 22 November.
Designed for those living with dementia, their carers, families, and friends, these sessions aim to provide understanding, strategies, and support in navigating the complexities of dementia.
Why it Matters
With over 82,270 people currently living with dementia in Queensland, and projections showing that number could double to around 168,300 by 2054, the need for awareness and support is critical.
Dementia Australia’s sessions offer valuable resources to help carers, families, and communities support those affected by dementia.
By the Numbers
- 82,270 – Queenslanders currently living with dementia.
- 168,300 – Estimated number of people who could be living with dementia in Queensland by 2054, without a medical breakthrough.
Zoom In
These sessions offer a spectrum of support, including information on dementia-specific services, counselling, coaching, memory strategies, and practical assistance.
Virtual reality technology will also be featured, allowing participants to experience life from the perspective of someone living with dementia.
Zoom Out
Sessions like these are vital in fostering a more inclusive, dementia-friendly community, where those affected feel respected, understood, and supported.
Dementia Australia emphasises that through community engagement, Mackay can become “a place where everyone can thrive.”
Local Impact
Residents of Mackay and surrounding regions will gain insights into the realities of dementia and learn practical approaches to care.
These events also strengthen networks among local support organisations, enhancing the overall care infrastructure for those affected by dementia.
