What’s happening?
On 2 October 2024, Cauldron Ferm, a next-generation biomanufacturer, announced that it is being supported by the Queensland Government through its Industry Partnership Program (IPP) to establish a state-of-the-art precision fermentation contract manufacturing facility in Mackay.
This facility, known as the Cauldron Bio-fab, will be the first and largest end-to-end precision fermented bioproducts manufacturer in the Asia-Pacific region.
The project aligns with Queensland’s strategy to foster new industries and support decarbonisation efforts.
Why it Matters
Biomanufacturing has the potential to strengthen Australia’s national resilience by creating new domestic supply chains and improving food security.
As the world transitions towards decarbonisation, biomanufacturing offers a sustainable alternative to conventional industrial production methods.
The Mackay facility will play a crucial role in supplying key industries such as food, nutrition, materials, biofuels, and chemicals with cost-effective, resource-efficient bioproducts.
Additionally, it will contribute to job creation and economic growth in Queensland, supporting both local and global markets.
By the Numbers
- The Cauldron Bio-fab will have an annual production capacity exceeding 1,000 tonnes.
- Cauldron’s current 25,000-litre demo facility in New South Wales is scaling up to meet commercial demand.
- This industrial facility will serve multiple sectors, including food, beauty, chemicals, and biofuels.
Zoom in
Cauldron’s novel hyper-fermentation technology, a continuous fermentation process, significantly reduces the cost of goods, making bioproducts more affordable and competitive with conventional products.
By driving innovation at this scale, the Mackay Bio-fab is expected to lead breakthroughs in sustainable manufacturing, while also contributing to global decarbonisation targets.
Zoom Out
This initiative forms part of the Queensland Government’s broader new-industry development strategy, aimed at positioning the state as a leader in emerging sectors.
The Cauldron Bio-fab is a milestone in the global bioeconomy, with potential to revolutionise industries worldwide through sustainable bioproducts.
Local Impact
The Mackay facility will generate new job opportunities in Queensland while enhancing the state’s industrial capability. As the first in a planned network of industrial facilities, it also paves the way for future expansions that will further benefit the local economy and environment.
What to Look for Next
Cauldron plans to establish a global network of biomanufacturing facilities, expanding beyond Australia to multiple geographies. Watch for future announcements regarding additional partnerships and new facilities as Cauldron scales its operations globally.
