Discover Mackay a city rich in Industry History and Scenic Trails

Locals know Mackay for its strong mining, engineering, and agricultural industries, but our economy has become more diverse over the years. While these traditional sectors still play a big role, we’re also seeing growth in newer areas. Our services sector, including healthcare, education, technology and tourism, is increasingly contributing to the local economy and providing more opportunities.

For those who love to get out and explore, some of our city’s most iconic spots include the Bluewater Quay and the lively river markets. The Bluewater Trail forms a scenic loop around the City Centre. It stretches from Iluka Park in East Mackay all the way to the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, offering plenty to see and do along the way.

The Pioneer River is another local treasure. Stretching 120 kilometres, this “blue water” river winds its way through the heart of the Pioneer Valley and into the ocean. Originally called Mackay River by Captain John Mackay in 1860, the river was renamed the Pioneer River in 1862 to avoid confusion with a similarly named river further north.

The Pioneer Promenade, with its stunning riverfront views, is a great place to get in some exercise. The blue waters of the Pioneer River lap at the banks, and the Observation Deck offers the perfect spot to have a quick break and take it all in. It’s important to note that there are some individuals who may be experiencing homelessness along River Street, something that occasionally affects the area.

One historical landmark that stands out is the Forgan Bridge, which replaced the old Sydney Street Bridge from the 1880s. The original Forgan Bridge was opened in 1938 by Mrs. Forgan Smith, wife of the Queensland Premier at the time. In 2011, the new Forgan Bridge was completed, a 485-metre-long, four-lane structure that serves as a vital part of our city’s infrastructure. For many locals, it’s a bridge we travel across every day for work, making it a key part of our daily routines.
