What’s happening?
Almost $60 million will be invested in wide-ranging upgrades at Mackay Airport. The record infrastructure program includes a runway overlay, expanded car parking, a terminal transformation, and continued commercial development at the strategically located Milton Precinct.
Preliminary works have commenced across some of the projects, with the terminal upgrade scheduled to begin in January 2026.
Why it matters
Mackay Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said: “Our region is growing, and with the 2032 Brisbane Olympics on the horizon, there has never been a better time for a major investment in our facilities, for the benefit of both locals and visitors.”
Local impact
The terminal upgrade will create a vibrant new space, with more room for passengers, a remodelled observation deck, upgraded bathrooms and modern furnishings. Ahead of this year’s Christmas school holidays, a further 190 public car parks will be available.
Mr Barker said: “The first stage of Milton Precinct is now complete, and we look forward to making more exciting announcements soon, as we welcome new tenants and services.”
Construction will take place within the airport’s existing footprint, ensuring a cost-effective approach and minimising disruption for customers and stakeholders. More than 200 jobs will be created during the construction phase.
