What’s Happening?
Mackay will receive its own official Monopoly edition, with the game planned for release in March 2027.
Winning Moves is producing Monopoly: Mackay Edition under licence from Hasbro. The board is now in development, and local residents will help shape its final design.
The edition could feature well-known attractions such as Cape Hillsborough, Eungella National Park and Bluewater Lagoon. Local cafes, pubs, beaches, businesses, sporting clubs and community locations will also be considered.
Residents are being asked to nominate the places they believe best represent the region. Suggestions can be sent to info@winningmoves.com.au before the board is finalised around mid-August 2026.
Why It Matters?
The Mackay edition will give the region a place in one of the world’s best-known board games. It will also allow local people to influence how their city is represented.
In an exclusive Q&A with Mackay Minute, Winning Moves spokesperson Lily Slaviero said the region had received strong support for a local edition.
“Mackay is the perfect blend of coastal and country charm, we’ve had countless requests to create a Mackay version, it is a great candidate!” she said.
Slaviero said the region offered a strong mix of natural attractions and community locations. That variety will help the board reflect both visitors’ favourites and places valued by residents.
“Every Monopoly edition tells the story of its community, and Mackay has an incredible story to share. From its spectacular coastline and national parks to its local businesses, sporting clubs and community icons, there are so many places that capture the spirit of the region. We’re looking forward to hearing what locals are most passionate about and creating a board that truly reflects everything people love about Mackay.”
Local Impact
Community suggestions will influence which Mackay locations receive spaces on the final board. Winning Moves wants nominations for major attractions, but smaller local favourites will also be considered.
Slaviero said Cape Hillsborough, Eungella and Eimeo Beach were among the region’s standout locations. However, she said the board should also include places connected to everyday life.
“There are so many stunning locations, like Cape Hillsborough, Eungella and Eimeo Beach. But we also want people to nominate their local cafes, their favourite pubs, places that are beloved by people in town as well as visitors.”
The nomination process gives local businesses, clubs and community spaces a chance to be represented. It also allows residents to share which places hold the strongest connection to Mackay.
“These games are built on suggestions, my favourite part of making these editions is getting to chat with locals and hearing what they want to see featured,” Slaviero said.
By the Numbers
- 1935 was the year Monopoly first launched, giving the game more than nine decades of history.
- More than one billion people have played Monopoly since the original board game was released.
- 114 countries have welcomed the game, showing the global audience behind its regional editions.
Zoom In
The Mackay theme will extend beyond the properties placed around the board. Regional details will also appear throughout the cards, artwork and game money.
When asked whether the edition would include special local features, Slaviero confirmed that Mackay references would appear across the entire game.
“Absolutely. All the artwork, the community chest cards, even the money will be linked to the Mackay Region.”
This wider approach gives Winning Moves more space to include local industries, scenery and community references. It also means the edition can feature more than the limited number of property spaces.
Slaviero said she would personally like to see two natural attractions included in the final design.
“Personally I’d love to see the Botanic Gardens or Finch Hatton Gorge.”
Zoom Out
Mackay will become one of the latest Australian cities to receive its own Monopoly edition. The game will highlight the people, places and experiences that make the region distinct.
The edition is also being developed as a long-term retail product. It will not be restricted to a brief release or small collector run.
Slaviero said the game would remain available through major stores and participating local retailers.
“The games will remain available long term in shops like Big W, QBD Books, JB HiFi and local retailers!”
The long-term release could make the board popular with local families, visitors and Monopoly collectors. It could also provide lasting recognition for the places selected by the community.
What To Look For Next?
Winning Moves plans to finalise the Mackay board around mid-August 2026. Residents can continue submitting nominations before the final locations are selected.
“The board will be finalised around mid-August for a March 2027 launch,” Slaviero said.
Community input could produce a board combining major attractions with local cafes, pubs, clubs and lesser-known favourites. The final artwork, cards and money will then be completed ahead of the March 2027 release.
