What’s Happening?

The Mackay Road Runners’ informal offseason training series has introduced a refreshing twist with the inaugural Shawn’s Summer Series Splash & Dash Biathlon.

This new biathlon series, blending running and swimming, replaces the club’s traditional running-only offseason program.

The series has been an overwhelming success, offering a way to beat Mackay’s intense summer humidity while staying active.

Led by Race Director, Club Captain, and Life Member Jim Ford, the program features free training sessions, with participants only needing to pay a $4 entry fee to the Aquatic & Recreational Complex.

The series will conclude next Sunday with a final event, followed by an end-of-series presentation, random draw prizes, and icy Zooper Doopers for all.

The club also held its Annual General Meeting this week, electing long-time member and Life Member Paul Tilse as the new President.

Outgoing President Brendan Bishop was celebrated for his dedication, hard work, and humour, stepping down due to personal commitments.

Why It Matters?

The introduction of the biathlon series highlights the club’s adaptability and commitment to fostering inclusivity and fun within the community, especially during Mackay’s challenging summer conditions.

Events like these encourage participation regardless of skill level, embodying the club’s ethos of movement and camaraderie.

Local Impact

The Mackay Road Runners continue to provide a welcoming space for locals to stay active, make connections, and enjoy physical activity.

The biathlon series has attracted participants from diverse backgrounds, further strengthening the community’s bond through sport.

Fun Facts:

  • Jim Ford has been leading informal training sessions, including the regular Wednesday 5:30 pm track training, for years at no cost.

What The People Say?

“You don’t need to be a member, a fast swimmer, or runner. It’s all about getting out and moving with likeminded, fun people.”

Outgoing President Brendan Bishop was praised for an amazing year of leadership: “Thank you for your commitment, hard work, and great Dad jokes.”
