New QLD boating rules starts this July

What’s happening?

From 1 July 2025, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and its partner agencies will begin issuing $333 fines to boaties failing to comply with the state’s updated lifejacket laws. Although these laws took effect on 1 December 2024, the grace period for education ends this week.

Why it matters

With over 1 million Queenslanders holding recreational boating licences, MSQ aims to reduce deaths on local waterways. “The new laws are aimed at making boating a safer activity for the more than 1 million Queenslanders with recreational boating licences, and their passengers,” MSQ stated.

Local Impact

With coastal hotspots like Mackay Harbour, the Pioneer River, Kinchant Dam, and the Whitsundays, local boaties are among those most affected. Community members heading out over the winter school holidays should review the new rules before launching.

By the Numbers

  • 64 Queenslanders died in boating incidents between 2019 and 2023. Only 5 were wearing lifejackets.

  • $333 is the minimum fine now issued for failing to comply with the new laws.

  • These rules affect over 1 million recreational boat licence holders statewide.

Zoom In

Lifejackets must now be worn:

  • While boating alone or only with kids under 12 in open boats under 4.8m.

  • While crossing designated coastal bars in open boats or open deck areas.

  • When boating at night in open boats under 4.8m.

  • By all children under 12 in open boats or open areas, at any time underway.
Also mandatory while crossing coastal bars on:

  • Small sailing boats, pedal boats, inflatable rafts, rowboats (except SLSA surfboats), and sea/surf kayaks.

Zoom Out

MSQ had previously emphasised education over enforcement. Now, that changes. The rule shift aligns Queensland with best-practice marine safety nationally. “Wearing a lifejacket is one of the simplest ways to save a life on the water,” MSQ reiterates.

What to look for next?

Maritime Safety Queensland will increase patrols and compliance checks across the state, especially during busy holiday periods. Boaties should check that their lifejackets meet legal standards and understand when they must be worn. Visit the Maritime Safety Queensland website for full details, safety tips, and approved gear.
