What’s happening?

MRAEL, part of the IntoWork Group, is delivering the Parent Pathways Program across Mackay and surrounding regions.

Exclusively awarded the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations contract in late 2024, the program supports parents and carers of children under six who are not in paid employment and receive Parenting Payment, Carer Payment, or Special Benefit.

The service is voluntary, personalised, and flexible—providing one-on-one mentoring to help participants reach their personal, training, or work goals.

Why it matters

The Parent Pathways Program is bridging the gap for many parents who have previously been overlooked by traditional support systems.

From driving lessons to mental health support and financial relief, the program is removing barriers to stability and employment. “With MRAEL’s Parent Pathways, it’s different. My provider and I meet frequently, and when I express a need, it gets addressed. It’s a huge relief,” said 20-year-old single mum Anita, whose journey reflects the power of tailored support.

Local Impact

MRAEL’s outreach extends beyond Mackay to Bowen, Cannonvale, Clermont, Collinsville, Dysart, Moranbah, Nebo, Proserpine, and Sarina. For Anita, the program has been life-changing. After being referred by Centrelink and initially feeling hesitant due to past negative experiences, she said the personalised care made all the difference. “Before joining Parent Pathways, I felt like I was being thrown into the deep end. There was a lot of talk, but not much action,” she said. “Getting my licence has been a game-changer.”

MRAEL covered the costs of her driving lessons through PCYC, helped her connect with a women’s centre for mental health support, and is now assisting with job applications and resume building as she prepares to move towns in April. “I’m looking at retail jobs to start with, just to get back into the workforce. It’s been a few years, and I want to ease back in,” she said.

By the Numbers:

–  Since its rollout in November 2024, more than 100 parents in the Mackay region have already gained support through the Parent Pathways Program.

– The program operates across 10 regional locations, making services more accessible for families: Mackay, Bowen, Cannonvale, Clermont, Collinsville, Dysart, Moranbah, Nebo, Proserpine, and Sarina.

– MRAEL celebrates 40 years in 2025 as Queensland’s leading provider of training, education, and employment services.

Anita’s journey showcases the value of comprehensive support. “The program has helped me in so many ways, from groceries to career guidance. I feel more confident and supported than ever before,” she said. Facing housing insecurity and mental health struggles linked to domestic violence, she found relief through referrals and practical aid. “The women’s centre has been a lifeline, and support from my provider at Parent Pathways has been invaluable.”

Zoom Out

MRAEL’s Parent Pathways Program reflects a national shift toward inclusive, wraparound support services for parents out of work. As part of the IntoWork Group, MRAEL continues to expand its impact by helping families build self-sufficiency, confidence, and brighter futures through holistic care and employment readiness.

What to Look for Next?

As the program continues to grow across the region, MRAEL encourages more eligible parents and carers to take part. “Our team is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of parents and carers in the Mackay region,” said CEO Jason Allen. “We are dedicated to helping them build more vibrant futures for themselves and their families.” Anita’s message to others is simple: “Don’t hesitate. The support and resources are there for you, and they can make a world of difference.”
