What’s happening?
On 30 August 2025, the Postie Bike Safari will set off from Mackay for its 13th annual ride, raising funds for Childhood Cancer Support.

Around 30 riders and five support vehicles will travel over 2,000 kilometres through outback Queensland, stopping in small towns and spreading awareness along the way.

Why it matters

This grassroots initiative helps bridge the gap for regional families who must travel to Brisbane for their child’s cancer treatment. “Every kilometre brings us closer to our goal which is raising vital funds for Childhood Cancer Support,” said event organiser Greg Becke. Riders fund their own travel and give up a week of work to support the cause.

Local Impact

Childhood Cancer Support is a Queensland charity that, for over 45 years, has provided no-cost accommodation, transport, and care to regional families navigating the heartbreak of a childhood cancer diagnosis. Their mission is simple but life-changing, keeping families together during one of life’s hardest moments.

By the Numbers

  • The Safari has raised more than $825,000 for charity since it began in 2013.

  • In the past four years alone, it has raised $524,000 for Childhood Cancer Support.

  • Last year’s closing celebration dinner and auction raised over $14,000, with all proceeds going directly to helping regional families.

Zoom In

Greg Becke recalls moments that fuel the riders’ purpose. “At Greenvale, they asked us to ride past the school so the kids could see something exciting,” he said. “At Jervoise Station, they gave us afternoon tea and a donation. It’s generosity like that, from strangers, that reminds us why we do it.”
Meeting affected families along the way leaves a lasting impact. “One night at the Bowen River Hotel, a family who’d stayed at Childhood Cancer Support came to thank us, they showed us photos of their child’s treatment journey,” Greg shared.

“It’s times like these we realise what the funds actually do. It’s what keeps us riding.”

Zoom Out

The event started as a humble idea in 2013, when Greg and a few mates rode 13 Postie bikes for charity. Today, it’s a much-anticipated annual journey of camaraderie and compassion. “There’s just something special about the simplicity of a Postie bike and the big heart of the people who ride them,” Greg said. “We pay for our own fuel, our own food and accommodation, and give up a week of work – but we keep coming back because of the impact we can make.”

What to Look For Next
This year’s Postie Bike Safari wraps with a celebration dinner and charity auction at Ocean International in Mackay. Greg encourages new riders to join the cause: “Get on a Postie, see parts of this country you never have, and help kids who really need it. Everything else is taken care of – all you’ve got to do is ride.”
