What’s happening?
Queensland’s racing industry continues to deliver economic momentum, with the latest Racing Queensland Size and Scope Report revealing a $50 million increase in industry value from FY23 to FY24. The sector now contributes nearly $2.5 billion annually to the state’s economy.
Why it matters?
This growth affirms the racing industry’s vital role in Queensland’s economy—especially in regional areas. It also underpins nearly 14,500 full-time jobs and supports thousands of participants in thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing across the state.
Local Impact
In Mackay alone, the racing industry injects close to $40 million annually, boosting jobs, tourism, and small business activity. Across regional Queensland, more than half of the industry’s economic contribution flows directly into local communities.
By the Numbers:
-
The total value added by the industry has increased 104% since FY16, with full-time employment rising from 9,546 to 14,472.
-
49,248 people are currently involved in the Queensland racing industry.
-
The State hosts around 32 race meetings per week, involving participants from Birdsville to Cooktown.
