What’s Happening

A record-breaking number of submissions has been received in the 2024 Regional Telecommunications Review, reflecting heightened concerns over connectivity issues for Australians in regional, rural, and remote areas.

Chaired by the Hon Alannah MacTiernan, the independent Committee has conducted face-to-face consultations and reviewed these submissions to ensure comprehensive input.

The Committee will soon deliver its report and recommendations to the Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP, who established the Review’s Terms of Reference in January 2024.

Why It Matters

Addressing regional connectivity is crucial, especially as rural Australians increasingly rely on telecommunications for essential services and emergency preparedness.

Insights gathered from the Review have the potential to shape policies aimed at reducing the digital divide and improving quality of life across regional Australia.

By the Numbers

  • 3,404 total submissions– reflecting a 400% increase from 2021, a record in the Review’s history
  • 3,098 online survey responses, thanks to an accessible format introduced this year.
  • 306 written submissions, capturing in-depth accounts of connectivity challenges.

Local Impact

The Committee’s forthcoming recommendations are expected to enhance connectivity in regional communities, providing a stronger telecommunications framework to support day-to-day life and ensure resilience during emergencies.

“Dialling into the Future”

Committee Chair Hon Alannah MacTiernan, along with members Mr Ian Kelly, the Hon Fiona Nash, Dr Jessa Rogers, and Ms Kristy Sparrow, has placed community feedback at the centre of its approach. Their extensive consultations aim to ensure the recommendations reflect the true needs of rural Australia and bridge longstanding connectivity gaps.

What The People Say

“On behalf of the Committee, I’d like to thank everyone who has taken the time to have their say – your input will help us shape the report and recommendations to the Australian Government going forward.” – Hon Alannah MacTiernan, Committee Chair

What To Look For Next

With the Committee’s report due by 31 December 2024, rural Australians can anticipate policy shifts and potentially new programs aimed at improving connectivity.

The upcoming recommendations will seek to address unique rural needs and establish a robust framework to support telecommunications access across Australia.
