What’s Happening?

The Salvation Army has launched its annual Christmas Appeal, encouraging Central Queensland communities to help individuals and families facing hardship.

The organisation hopes to raise $35 million nationally as financial and emotional pressures add to the challenges many households face during Christmas.

Through its Christmas Appeal, the Salvos are seeking community support to help meet the need for assistance across Australia during the festive season.

Why It Matters

For families already struggling with everyday expenses, Christmas can bring additional financial and emotional pressure. Some households face difficult decisions between buying food and paying essential bills, particularly when caring for children.

Rendle Williams, The Salvation Army’s External Communications Manager for Queensland, said the organisation expected another demanding Christmas period.

“Christmas is the busiest time of the year for the Salvos, and this year will be no different,” said Williams.

“We know that there are people in the Central QLD community that are really struggling this year, and Christmas will only intensify these struggles. Some will be forced into heartbreaking decisions between their next meal or paying utility bills, not only for themselves but also for their children.

Local Impact

The appeal provides Central Queensland communities with opportunities to support people experiencing hardship during the festive season.

Residents can participate through donations, volunteering and Christmas community activities organised by The Salvation Army. Those interested in local celebrations can contact their nearest Salvation Army centre for information.

Beyond financial assistance, the organisation is also encouraging people experiencing loneliness or isolation to reach out for support.

“That’s why The Salvos exist– to support our community when they need it most. Whether it is for practical support like food or presents, or if you are feeling lonely or isolated this Christmas, please reach out to The Salvation Army. We are here for you, and we don’t want you to do Christmas alone.”

By The Numbers

During last year’s Christmas period, The Salvation Army reported the following assistance across Australia:

  • More than 350,000: Gifts and toys received for families who might otherwise have gone without.
  • More than 158,000: Meals provided to people experiencing homelessness.
  • More than 79,000: Bed nights provided for families needing accommodation during the festive season.

Community members have several ways to contribute to the Christmas Appeal, depending on their circumstances.

Financial donations support the organisation’s community work, while gifts and food provide another way to assist people in need. Meanwhile, residents who prefer to contribute their time can volunteer during the festive season.

Zoom Out

The Christmas Appeal forms part of The Salvation Army’s wider community support work across Australia.

Alongside direct donations, the organisation is encouraging Australians to consider Salvos Stores when shopping for Christmas gifts and decorations.

According to The Salvation Army, 100% of profits from Salvos Stores support its community work nationally. This provides another way for shoppers to contribute while looking for affordable Christmas items.

What To Look For Next?

With Christmas approaching, The Salvation Army is encouraging Central Queensland residents to get involved in the appeal and support those experiencing hardship.

Williams said community generosity would be essential to the organisation’s efforts.

“The Salvos can’t support people this Christmas without the generosity of our local community, so please dig deep if you can. That could look like donating to our Christmas Appeal, volunteering, or attending our local events. Reach out to us, and together we can be the hope that our community desperately needs this Christmas,” said Williams.

For information about Christmas events, donations or available assistance, residents can visit The Salvation Army or call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58).

Donations can also be made at any Salvos Store.
