Engaging Queenslanders for Better Connectivity

Queenslanders are being invited to voice their experiences and challenges with telecommunications as the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee (RTIRC) embarks on a series of face-to-face consultations across the state.

This initiative, part of a national effort that began with a survey in May, aims to gather critical insights that will help in strengthening telecommunications in Queensland.

Community Consultations Across the State

The RTIRC will engage with community leaders, local businesses, and residents through public consultations in various locations, including

Mount Isa on 17 June, Mornington Island on 18 June, and both Thursday Island and Cairns on 19 June. These consultations are vital in shaping recommendations that address the specific needs of rural, remote, and regional Australia.

Focus on Regional Needs and Challenges

Key discussion points will include the effectiveness of current government investment programs, improvements in telecommunications during emergencies, and the extent to which First Nations communities’ needs are being met.

The feedback collected will inform government policies and programs aimed at strengthening telecommunications in Queensland and beyond.

Broad Participation and Future Insights

For those unable to attend in person, the Committee welcomes written submissions and survey responses until 31 July 2024.

This inclusive approach ensures a wide range of perspectives are considered, enhancing the relevance and impact of the Committee’s findings.

Commitment to Regional Development

Chaired by the Hon Alannah MacTiernan, the RTIRC is committed to understanding and addressing the unique telecommunications challenges faced by regional Australians.

“With the technology landscape rapidly changing, we can capitalise on new opportunities to strengthen connectivity across the country,” said MacTiernan.

By strengthening telecommunications in Queensland through these consultations, the RTIRC aims to support public safety, business operations, social inclusion, and access to essential services.

The Committee’s final report, due by 31 December 2024, will guide future government and industry efforts to enhance connectivity across Australia’s diverse regions.
