What’s happening?
The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is making an emergency call for donors across Queensland after blood stock levels hit a two-year low. Both O positive and O negative blood types are critically short, and an immediate response is needed.
Why it matters
“We issue nearly 10,000 blood transfusions and medications every day,” said spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh. “O-type blood, particularly O negative, is essential for emergency use and trauma cases.”
Its rarity makes it especially important. “Less than seven per cent of Australians have O negative, yet it’s involved in one in six hospital blood orders,” she added.
Local Impact
Mackay needs 75 O-type blood donors in the next week alone. While it might seem like a small number, every unit is life-saving. “Donating blood helps us prepare for surgeries, road trauma, and cancer treatment,” Belinda said.
By the Numbers
-
2,000 O-type donations needed statewide
-
75 of those needed in Mackay
-
40% of Australians have O positive blood — and can save lives too
