What’s happening?
The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has launched its annual Christmas Blood Blitz, with an urgent call for 150 blood and plasma donors from Mackay between December 18 and January 2.
This initiative aims to ensure that lifesaving supplies are available for patients during the busy holiday period.
Why it Matters?
Blood and plasma donations are essential for patients with immune conditions, cancer, trauma injuries, and women in childbirth.
The festive season often sees a decline in donations as routines are disrupted, making it crucial to ensure a steady supply of lifesaving blood products.
Belinda Smetioukh, Lifeblood spokesperson, said: “It is vital to have a constant stream of donors to ensure patient needs are met.”
Local Impact
Mackay locals are being called on to make a lifesaving difference by booking a donation at the Lifeblood donor centre.
Lifeblood centres will remain open throughout the holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, offering flexible opportunities to give back. “The most meaningful item you can put on your Christmas ‘to do’ list today is to lock in a blood or plasma donation and keep it,” Belinda added.
By the Numbers
- 150 blood and plasma donors are needed from Mackay between December 18 and January 2.
- Queensland requires over 3,500 donors in total during the same period.
- Donations benefit patients in need of cancer treatments, trauma care, and support for immune conditions.

A blood donation is a selfless gift that can not only save lives but improve the quality of lives and give people more precious moments with their loved ones,” said Belinda.
