What’s happening?

Brisbane Broncos legend and proud Indigenous man Sam Thaiday will act as the first-ever Ambassador for the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships on Sunday, 10 August 2025.

Why it matters

Thaiday’s role strengthens the bridge between sport, culture, and community. His career achievements and off-field advocacy align with the Rodeo’s mission to spotlight Indigenous excellence. “Having him as our inaugural ambassador will further inspire this – and the next – generation of Indigenous rodeo stars,” said Mount Isa Mines Rodeo Community Chair Mark Thompson.

Local Impact

Thaiday will be on the ground all weekend, cheering on riders and connecting with Outback families, cementing Mount Isa’s place on the national cultural map.

By the Numbers

  • The Championships were recognised with GOLD at the Queensland Tourism Awards and a Queensland Reconciliation Award.

  • 2023 highlights: Junior Jack Mullins took home 65 points in Steer Riding, and Cordel Gosbee, just 19, placed second in Steer Wrestling.

  • The event has grown rapidly over just four years to become the most significant celebration of Indigenous rodeo talent in the country.

Zoom In

Known for his media appearances and crowned King of the Jungle on I’m A Celebrity, Thaiday is no stranger to new roles. But this one hits close to home. “Rodeo is about grit, heart, and heritage,” he said, underscoring the cultural depth of the event.

Zoom Out

The Indigenous Rodeo Championships form part of the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo Festival, supported by the Queensland Government and Tourism and Events Queensland. Its growth illustrates the broader recognition of First Nations excellence in arenas far beyond sport.
