What’s happening?
Three young Mackay players have been picked for the 2026 Queensland Indoor U16 Boys Teams after last weekend’s state championships. The teams will head to Goulburn for the Australian Indoor Championships from 13 to 17 January 2026.
Local names on the list include Aston Paganoni from Rural View, Isaac Quartly from Habana, and Shadows player Izsak Barbeler from Glenella. Their selection places Mackay on the map among stronger hockey regions across the State.
Why it matters?
What this really means is Mackay’s indoor hockey pathway is working. Young athletes are rising through local programs and earning spots at national level events. These selections also give the boys higher level exposure while showing younger players that they can aim for the same stage.
By the numbers
Here’s the thing, the scale of the announcement shows how competitive this age group has become.
-
Mackay has three athletes selected across both Maroon and Shadows lists, which is a solid result for a regional centre.
-
Queensland named 32 players across both groups, placing Mackay’s share at close to 10 percent of the total squad.
-
The national championships will run for five days, giving players major game-time and pressure experience.
Zoom In
Aston Paganoni’s Rural View background shows consistent form across recent indoor seasons. Isaac Quartly from Habana continues to rise with strong defensive play. Shadows selection for Izsak Barbeler from Glenella puts him on standby for national duties and highlights the depth in Mackay’s junior ranks.
Zoom Out
Queensland’s wider squad brings together athletes from every corner of the State including Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. The strong regional spread shows growing competition for national level opportunities.
What to look for next?
All eyes are now on January. The boys will train through summer and head to Goulburn to face the country’s top indoor teams.
