What’s happening?

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is bringing its latest aviation safety seminar to Airlie Beach.

The free session will focus on decision-making in aviation. It aims to help pilots make safer calls before and during flights.

CASA said poor decision-making remains a leading cause of aircraft accidents worldwide.

The seminar is part of CASA’s national aviation safety program for pilots across Australia.

Why it matters?

Pilots make decisions at every stage of flying. These include pre-flight planning, go or no-go decisions, and in-flight choices.

Aviation safety advisor Tim Penney said the seminar would help pilots understand those decisions more clearly.

“When flying, a pilot makes decisions in every action before and during a flight, including pre-flight planning and go/no-go decisions,” Tim says.

“Different types of decision-making have different impacts in the cockpit, plus there are a range of factors that affect a pilot’s thinking and actions.

Local Impact

Airlie Beach pilots will have local access to free safety training at Whitsunday Airport.

The session is open to everyone, from novice pilots to experienced flyers. Refreshments will also be provided.

It gives the local aviation community a chance to refresh key skills without travelling far from the Whitsundays.

By the numbers

  • The Airlie Beach seminar will be held on Wednesday, 6 May 2026.
  • The session will run from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm AEST.
  • The seminar will be held at Whitsunday Airport at Shute Harbour in Airlie Beach, Queensland.

Zoom In

The seminar will look at how humans make decisions in aviation.

It will cover key thinking points before take-off and during a flight. CASA said the goal is to help pilots make the right call at the right time.

Tim Penney said pilots would leave with practical guidance.

“At the end of an informative session, you’ll get practical tips to improve your decision-making skills and be safer every time you fly.”

Zoom Out

CASA runs free aviation safety seminars across Australia each year.

The sessions are led by aviation safety advisors and are designed to help pilots refresh skills, improve knowledge, and strengthen flight safety.

This Airlie Beach seminar continues that wider national safety effort.

What To Look For Next?

Pilots and aviation community members planning to attend can book their spot online before the seminar.

The Airlie Beach session will give locals a practical chance to review decision-making habits before their next flight.
