Albanese Government leads in renewable energy approvals

Prairie Wind Farm is a generation project proposed by Windlab.

What’s happening?

The Albanese Government has approved the 800-megawatt Prairie Wind Farm in North Queensland, marking a significant milestone in Australia’s renewable energy journey.

Located 40km northeast of Hughenden, the wind farm will feature 116 turbines and generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of every home in Townsville, Cairns, the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Mackay, and Bundaberg combined.

Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek, emphasised the significance of this approval, stating: “Labor is getting on with the job of transforming Australia into a renewable energy superpower while Peter Dutton and David Littleproud’s expensive nuclear plan is threatening investment in renewables.”

Why it Matters?

This approval reinforces Labor’s commitment to renewable energy, addressing climate change, reducing power prices, and bolstering local economies.

Minister Plibersek highlighted the tangible progress under the government: “Last year more renewable energy was connected than any other year in Australian history, and 2025 is off to a great start.”

Renewable energy projects like the Prairie Wind Farm are not only reducing emissions but also providing affordable and reliable power for homes and businesses.

As Plibersek stated, “The renewable energy transition is real, it’s happening right now. And it’s the only plan supported by experts to deliver clean, affordable and reliable power for homes and businesses.”

Local Impact

The Prairie Wind Farm will provide substantial benefits for the Mackay region and broader North Queensland.

It is expected to create up to 240 construction jobs and 20 ongoing positions, supporting local employment and stimulating the regional economy.

The government has also ensured the project adheres to strict environmental conditions to protect nature.

The site, which is predominantly cleared land, has been designed to minimise impacts on threatened species. “I’ve now approved 70 renewable energy projects—enough to power more than 8 million Australian homes,” Plibersek noted, underscoring the scale of the government’s renewable push.

By the Numbers:

  • 70: Total renewable energy projects approved under the Albanese Government, the highest in Australian history.
  • 8 million: Homes these projects will collectively power.
  • 116: Wind turbines planned for the Prairie Wind Farm.

Zoom In

The Prairie Wind Farm will significantly contribute to North Queensland’s renewable energy output while supporting the national grid.

For Mackay, this means cleaner energy supply, local job creation, and economic growth tied to renewable projects.

With its eco-conscious design and focus on avoiding environmental harm, the project sets an example for sustainable development.

Zoom Out

Nationally, the Albanese Government’s record-breaking approval of 70 renewable energy projects demonstrates a decisive shift towards clean energy.

Minister Plibersek contrasted this approach with opposition proposals, saying: “Australians have a choice between a renewable energy transition that’s already underway and driving down prices, or to add $1,200 to power bills with Peter Dutton’s expensive nuclear fantasy that keeps emissions higher for longer.”

What to Look For Next?

Mackay and North Queensland communities can anticipate further renewable energy investments and related job opportunities as Labor continues its push for Australia to lead in clean energy production.

The project’s progress and its impact on local economies and the environment will remain key points of focus.
