Boosting Queensland’s Health Infrastructure
BESIX Watpac has been named the contractor for major expansions at Ipswich, Townsville, and Mackay Hospitals, reinforcing its status as a leading health infrastructure contractor in Australia.
These projects are part of the Queensland Government’s Health and Hospitals Plan, a comprehensive initiative with a historic $9.78 billion investment to bolster the state’s healthcare facilities over the next six years.
Expertise and Experience in Live Environments
Mark Baker, CEO of BESIX Watpac, emphasised the company’s extensive expertise in health infrastructure, developed over four decades. “Our live environment expertise, collaborative approach, and deep understanding of the technical requirements of hospital projects are crucial for the successful delivery of these expansions,” said Baker.
This project’s continuity is vital, ensuring that current hospital services remain operational while construction is underway.
Significant Expansions in Mackay
The Mackay Base Hospital expansion is particularly noteworthy, with plans to add 128 beds across various units, including surgical inpatient, maternity and birthing, and paediatric care.
This expansion will involve both new building construction and internal refurbishments, significantly enhancing the hospital’s capacity and services.
Building a Positive Legacy
Wade Cummins, BESIX Watpac General Manager for QLD, NT & NZ, expressed pride in the ongoing partnership with Queensland Health. “We are committed to shaping crucial health infrastructure in Queensland, engaging with local communities, and leaving a positive legacy,” Cummins noted.
The company’s regional projects, such as the Gold Coast Secure Mental Health Unit and the Ipswich Hospital’s new Mental Health Facility, highlight its dedication to enhancing healthcare accessibility across the state.
A Track Record of Excellence
Since the 1980s, BESIX Watpac has successfully completed numerous health infrastructure projects across Queensland.
From the Roma Hospital Redevelopment to the Surgical, Treatment, and Rehabilitation Services Building at Herston Quarter, the company’s contributions have been significant and far-reaching.
