Why It Matters?
This exhibition offers Mackay audiences an immersive opportunity to engage with Indigenous Australian Art, exploring themes of identity, culture, and historical connection. It highlights the cultural significance of inherited practices and raises awareness of the impact of object collection and estrangement on First Nations communities.
QAGOMA Director Chris Saines remarked, “‘I, Object’ considers the many complex relationships Indigenous Australian artists continue to have with objects – from the histories informing their creation to the social and cultural consequences of their collection.”
Deputy Mayor Karen May added, “We’re grateful to QAGOMA for touring this exhibition to our gallery, providing an opportunity for us all to experience this important expression of identity, culture and connection.”
Local Impact
Mackay’s Artspace will serve as a cultural hub, connecting the local community with both contemporary art and historical artefacts. This exhibition not only enriches the cultural fabric of the region but also sparks important conversations about Indigenous heritage.
Cr May described the exhibition as “exciting” and emphasised the value it brings to Mackay residents.
