What’s Happening?

On March 9, 2025, Queensland Police Service (QPS) launched Operation Xray Secure to combat opportunistic property crime amid severe weather in Mackay and southeast Queensland. Additional police and emergency personnel have been deployed to protect homes, businesses, and communities affected by floods.

Why It Matters?

With widespread flooding leaving properties vulnerable, looters and criminals have been targeting affected areas. This operation aims to prevent crime, support emergency responses, and enhance community safety across impacted regions.

Local Impact

Mackay has contributed to the expanded police presence, with officers from Mackay among the 110 additional police deployed. Their role includes proactive patrols, crime prevention, and supporting emergency services.

By the Numbers:

  • 110 additional police officers from Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, and Rockhampton have been deployed to support local forces.
  • 249 extra police officers were already assigned to flood-affected regions in southeast Queensland.
  • 65 extra SES personnel are on the ground, with 100 more expected from interstate tomorrow.

Recent arrests highlight the urgency of police action. In a flooded carpark at Labrador, a 26-year-old man was arrested for looting, drug possession, and carrying a knife. Another 44-year-old man in Rocklea was found in a submerged vehicle with house-breaking tools and stolen keys, while a 27-year-old in Nudgee Beach was caught carrying a machete.

This proactive operation aligns with broader efforts to mitigate crime risks during natural disasters. Queensland’s police force, backed by SES reinforcements, is working tirelessly to protect vulnerable communities.

Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon reaffirmed their commitment: “Police across the southeast will be out in force, bolstered again by additional police and SES resources. Whether it’s responding to calls for assistance, disrupting opportunistic thieves targeting innocent Queenslanders’ properties or providing a helping hand where it’s needed most.”

“We urge anyone who observes suspicious or criminal behaviour to report it to police. This information is invaluable in helping inform where proactive patrols are needed most.

“We ask all Queenslanders to stay up to date with warnings, stay safe on our roads and to always put your safety first.”

What to Look for Next?

Police and SES personnel will continue proactive patrols and emergency response operations. Residents are urged to stay alert, report suspicious activity, and follow official safety updates.
