What’s happening?
On Friday 16 May 2025, Mackay’s primary school students will join in National Walk Safely to School Day, a movement that promotes walking as a daily habit. Now in its 26th year, this event brings the spotlight to student wellbeing.
Why it matters
“This is an opportunity to tackle childhood obesity and teach long-term safety and environmental habits,” said Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. “Walking is the best form of activity for all Australians.”
Scruby reminded parents, “Until they are 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.”
Local Impact
Mackay schools will host Healthy Breakfasts and are encouraged to form walking groups that build safe and fun community routines.
By the Numbers
- 1 in 4 Australian children face critical obesity levels (ABS 2017–18)
- Children require at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily
- Walk Safely Day will involve thousands across Mackay and beyond
