Empowering Futures, Supporting Talent

In a bid to foster local talent and provide a stepping stone for aspiring professionals, the Academic Bursary Program in Mackay is set to open its doors to university students.

Established in 2011, the program has become a beacon of opportunity for those in their second year, offering a blend of paid work experience and financial support.

Investing in Tomorrow’s Leaders

Mayor Greg Williamson, a staunch advocate for the program, emphasises its role in supporting the region’s students. “Mackay is a great place to live and work, and working at the council offers a great work-life balance,” says Mayor Williamson.

The program not only nurtures academic excellence but also aims to retain talented professionals within the region.

A Boost for Students and the Region

The 2023 Academic Bursary recipient, Kai Sanim, pursuing a Bachelor of Business Management majoring in Human Resources at CQUniversity, highlights the transformative impact of the program.

The bursary has allowed me to focus on my studies without the stress of supporting myself through part-time work,” says Mr. Sanim.

The $5000 financial assistance proves to be a significant relief, easing the burden of the current cost of living pressures.

Real-world Insights and Connections

Beyond financial aid, the program provides students with a glimpse into their chosen fields and an avenue to build valuable connections.

Kai Sanim attests to the invaluable work experience, stating, “It’s a great way of putting my studies into practice and will go a long way in kickstarting my future career.”

Skills Shortage Areas Encouraged to Apply

The program encourages applications from students studying in critical skills shortage areas, including Engineering, Planning, Business, Environmental Health/Science, Workplace Health and Safety/Emergency Services, and Information Technology/Digital Media.
