What’s Happening?
Troppo Markets has relocated to Caneland Central, bringing the popular community market to the Mackay shopping centre’s undercover parking area.
The Sentinel Property Group-owned centre recently hosted its first market, marking a new chapter for the long-running event. The markets will operate on the second Sunday of each month, from 7.30am to 11.30am, with a gold coin entry donation.
Why It Matters
The relocation has delivered an encouraging start for Caneland Central, creating opportunities to attract visitors beyond regular shopping hours.
For retailers, the additional visitors could mean more customers, particularly those arriving early for the markets.
Sentinel CEO Warren Ebert said the initiative would also help strengthen the shopping centre’s relationship with the local community.
“The inaugural Troppo Markets at Caneland Central represents another positive initiative to drive visitation to the centre and further strengthen our connection with the Mackay community,” Mr Ebert said.
By The Numbers
- 20 per cent: Overall foot traffic at Caneland Central increased by 20 per cent on the market’s opening day, highlighting strong initial interest.
- Eight years: Troppo Markets operated at Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre for eight years before relocating, having previously been held at Mackay Showgrounds.
- $280 million: Sentinel Property Group purchased Caneland Central for $280 million in 2022, adding to its significant investments across the Mackay region.
Local Impact
The market’s arrival is already influencing how some Caneland Central retailers operate, particularly businesses catering to early morning customers.
Centre manager Mark Farquhar said several food and beverage outlets would adjust their trading hours to serve marketgoers.
“We have several retailers such as Laffo’s, Muffin Break and Jamaica Blue who will open slightly earlier to capture the ‘breakfast crowd’ and to assist replenish the market vendors.”
These arrangements could benefit both market vendors and retailers, while giving visitors more options during their Sunday morning visits.
However, Mr Farquhar believes the opportunity extends beyond food purchases and the market’s trading hours.
“Beyond the markets themselves, this is an opportunity to introduce Caneland Central to additional visitors, encourage cross shopping with our retailers and create another reason for the community to visit the centre.”
Zoom In
Despite the successful opening, centre management will use the first few markets to assess how the event operates alongside regular shopping activities.
This includes managing vehicle movements, parking availability and pedestrian access while maintaining a positive experience for visitors and retailers.
“We will be closely monitoring traffic movements, parking, pedestrian access, customer experience and any impacts on normal centre operations, making adjustments where necessary,” Mr Farquhar said. “These opportunities don’t happen without considerable work behind the scenes, and our centre management team continue to identify new ways to activate the asset and enhance our offering.”
Zoom Out
Caneland Central is the Mackay region’s only regional-scale shopping centre, serving as a major retail destination for the surrounding community. Its major retailers include Myer, Woolworths, Coles, Target and Big W, alongside eight mini-majors, 161 specialty stores and 21 kiosks.
With such a broad retail offering, the addition of Troppo Markets connects an established community event with one of Mackay’s major shopping destinations. For Sentinel Property Group, the initiative also forms part of its efforts to increase visitation and encourage greater community use of the centre.
What To Look For Next?
With Troppo Markets now established at Caneland Central, the monthly event could continue attracting visitors and supporting local businesses. As more residents become familiar with the new location, the markets may strengthen their place in Mackay’s community calendar.
