Pumped Hydro Energy Project ceased following State Election

Pioneer Valley, Mackay

What’s happening?

Following the recent State Election, the Queensland Government directed Queensland Hydro to discontinue the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) Project, initially proposed in the Pioneer Valley and nearby ranges, around 75km west of Mackay.

The decision followed Queensland Hydro’s extensive technical investigations across the project site, culminating in a Detailed Analytical Report that was published as an executive summary on 5 November 2024.

Why it matters?

The Pioneer-Burdekin Project represented a major step towards unlocking renewable energy in Queensland due to its strategic location within the Central and Northern Queensland Renewable Energy Zones.

Positioned to harness wind and solar resources, the project aimed to store significant amounts of renewable energy, enhancing Queensland’s long-term energy stability and supporting its renewable energy targets.

The project’s discontinuation marks a significant shift, impacting future energy plans and local landholders.

Local Impact

The decision to cease the Pioneer-Burdekin Project impacts the Pioneer Valley region, where land was acquired for project activities.

Queensland Hydro is now shifting its focus to project closure, including the demobilisation of equipment from the site.

Additionally, Queensland Hydro has committed to a careful, principle-driven approach to selling land back to previous landholders.

Community members and affected landholders are encouraged to reach out to Queensland Hydro with any questions or concerns.

Zoom In

Queensland Hydro’s technical investigations highlighted the area’s potential due to its “favourable topography and proximity to high-quality wind and solar generation sources,” presenting an ideal site for long-duration energy storage.

The Pioneer-Burdekin Project, if realised, would have played a crucial role in strengthening Queensland’s renewable infrastructure and supporting its energy transition goals.

Zoom Out

The decision to end the Pioneer-Burdekin Project comes amid ongoing efforts across Australia to develop renewable energy zones and achieve climate goals.

The project was intended as a complement to the Borumba PHES, initially announced in June 2021.

The state’s renewable energy strategy continues to be a priority, although adjustments to project specifics reflect evolving governmental directives and regional priorities.

What to Look For Next?

Queensland Hydro will continue with the process of project closure and the return of acquired land to landholders.

As part of the closure, Queensland Hydro has stated it “will act with care and establish principles that will guide the process of selling land back to landholders.”

Additionally, renewable energy stakeholders may look towards other projects within Queensland’s Renewable Energy Zones for future energy developments.
