What’s Happening? The 2025 Mackay Regional Council Australia Day Awards nominees have been announced, showcasing the exceptional contributions of 102 individuals and groups. These nominees were selected from over 115 nominations received across nine categories, including a new category, the Brenden Borellini Access and Inclusion Achievement Award. Winners will be honoured at a ceremony on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC). Why It Matters? The Australia Day Awards highlight the dedication, creativity, and service of Mackay region residents and groups who have made a positive impact on their communities. What’s happening? Two talented Mackay students, Leo Gorrion and Ebony Wright, have been awarded significant bursaries to support their artistic pursuits. The $3,000 Jack Sturgeon Bursary, sponsored by the Friends of the MECC, will help Leo pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Production) at the University of Melbourne. Ebony Wright, the recipient of the $3,000 Artspace Mackay Foundation Bursary, is studying a Bachelor of Visual Art at Griffith University. Why it matters? These bursaries are crucial in supporting young, aspiring artists, particularly as tertiary education costs continue to rise.
