What’s happening?

Australia’s largest outback rodeo, the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, is gearing up for its biggest year yet with two new local events added to the 2025 program: the Eli Donovan Memorial Local Station Buck Jump and the Open Steer Ride. Set for 8–10 August 2025 at Buchanan Park, the rodeo will once again spotlight raw Outback talent and community pride.

Why it matters

These new events are designed to shine a spotlight on regional jackaroos, jillaroos, station workers, and young riders who represent the heart of the Outback. “These events honour the heritage of the Isa and the hardworking people who keep the Outback ticking,” said Mark ‘Tommo’ Thompson, Chair of the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo. “It’s about community pride, showcasing the incredible talent we have right here at home, and creating new pathways for local riders to rise.”

Local Impact

For North and Central Queenslanders, including those in Mackay, the additions bring greater regional representation and fresh opportunities. From grassroots competitors to proud local spectators, the rodeo’s 2025 program makes it more accessible, inclusive, and celebratory of rural heritage. The Eli Donovan event is particularly meaningful to the Mount Isa community, commemorating a beloved local rider.

By the Numbers:

  • Prize money has increased across every single event, boosting incentive and prestige for both locals and national contenders.

  • Entry fees have dropped, with daily prices slashed and new affordable family passes introduced.

  • Camping packages remain affordable, allowing more visitors to experience the three-day rodeo under the stars.

Zoom In

The Eli Donovan Memorial Local Station Buck Jump is set to deliver a no-frills, full-throttle bucking contest featuring true Outback grit from local jackaroos and jillaroos. The Open Steer Ride gives young riders from the region a unique platform to cut their teeth in front of thousands. Both are designed not only as crowd favourites but also as stepping stones to higher-level rodeo competition.

Zoom Out

With over 60 years of tradition, the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo continues to evolve while holding strong to its roots. The 2025 event promises more than just rodeo action – including live entertainment with returning legend Luke Geiger, affordable food and drinks, and the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships, which return for a fourth year with a new time slot on Sunday morning before the Open Finals.
