What’s Happening?
On World Earth Day (22 April), the Great Barrier Reef was officially nominated for the prestigious United Nations Champions of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award. The Reef would become the first non-human recipient in the award’s history.
Why It Matters
This landmark nomination highlights the Reef’s vital role in global biodiversity, First Nations culture, and environmental education. It brings international attention to the urgent need for continued protection.
Local Impact
The Mackay region, part of the Reef’s coastline, has strong ties to the nomination through local Reef Guardian Schools and tourism operators. The initiative empowers residents to share their connection with the Reef globally.
By the Numbers
-
🌏 The Reef supports over 9,000 species of marine life, making it one of Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystems.
-
🧬 It spans 2,300 kilometres, making it the world’s largest coral reef system.
-
🧒 Students from Newman Catholic College helped shape the submission by describing their firsthand learning experiences.
